Terminator star and former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has urged people to give up meat and take-up a plant-based diet “for the benefit of humanity.”
In partnership with James Cameron, Schwarzenegger is spreading a message of, “less meat, less heat, more life.”
Cameron and Schwarzenegger were inspired to make the plea after learning of China’s bid to cut meat consumption by 50 percent in an effort to prevent the spread of heart disease and diabetes.
According to the documentary Cowspiracy, livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51 percent of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. By utilizing land to grow crops that feed humans rather than cows, world hunger could be managed and the large amounts of methane produced by the livestock (which is 25-100 times more destructive than carbon dioxide on a 20-year time frame) will be lessened.
Eating healthy, plant-based food is easier now than ever before. Not only is it better for your body, but giving up animal products supports a cruelty free lifestyle.
